Over the last 8 years or so I've lost the ability to write. Not in the literal sense, since I am clearly putting finger to keyboard and producing something that seems somewhat logical. No, what I mean is I used to write All. The. Time. Anything, everything, mostly short (or not so short) fiction. I wasn't half bad. I wasn't great, either, but I was at least able to create. Thanks to a hack of a creative writing teacher in my first year of university who said my writing lacked "depth" I haven't written since. I'm still not sure why his words or criticism struck me as they did and still do. He wasn't anything to me. He didn't mean anything in the grand scheme of things. Yet he, one among the hundreds before him who said differently, was able to shut me down.
I wasn't trying to have depth. I've never been that self involved or self aware to try to mean something. I just wanted to write, to entertain, to create something other people would enjoy. Instead I was shot down, told I wrote too "TV like" because my characters liked to talk, told that my stories didn't have meaning, didn't "speak".
So why am I writing now? Good question.
I'm still not trying to have depth. You won't see emo-like posts exuding feelings or observations or "meaning". I'm not that person. I'm going to use this as an outlet, as a guide, a way to find my way back to the person I was before. Back to my writing & my creativity.
Hopefully this goes well.
